Rest & Recuperate: Dr. Brynn's Brain-Based Productivity Boosters
It turns out that working harder, longer, and faster do not improve your productivity, motivation, performance, functionality, or effectiveness.
Instead, new research is demonstrating something very interesting.
As it turns out, the QUALITY of your (brain's) REST directly relates to the QUALITY of your WORK. Working MORE isn't going to help - there are diminishing marginal returns after about 90 minutes that quickly plummet to zero on the productivity scale, while simultaneously triggering a stress response in the brain and body - which, to add insult to injury, means much longer-term decrements in productivity.
What this means is that YOU HAVE to REST MORE in order to GET MORE DONE throughout your day.
Your brain needs breaks at a minimum every 90 minutes followed by a rest that is at least 15 minutes long to a max of about 20 mins or so (before productivity actually falls off because getting back to the task at hand becomes more challenging.)
So this week, in order to be more motivated, productive, functional, and performative, try giving yourself scheduled, consistent, high-quality rest between work-stints and you're likely to get more done, with higher levels of satisfaction, warding off potential for burnout.
This brain-based booster brought to you in honor of 'Blue Monday' - statistically the 'saddest' day of the year - here's to your continued happiness and success. Happy Monday!
