Proactive Planning: Dr. Brynn's Brain-Based Productivity Boosters

Did you know that our brains naturally over-estimate the cognitive resources such as time, energy, attention, interest we will have in future terms? We often think we will have more energy, time, enthusiasm for something than we do - which means when the time comes, we end up procrastinating, putting something off, or being completely frazzled by an overloaded list of self-imposed demands.
Knowing this is the first half of the battle - forewarned is forearmed - but there are a couple of brain-based tricks you can use to help you overcome our bias for over-estimating our cognitive resources.

The first, is what I call the 'rule of 1' - pick 1 thing from the laundry-list of 'to-do' items on your list that you will absolutely FOCUS on (part of the trick!) and get done today. Don't expect that you will have energy, time, enthusiasm or interest in doing a second or a third project etc. If you do end up getting the second or third thing done, you'll have a sense of over-achievement and be very pleased with yourself and motivated to keep up your momentum. If you do in fact only get the 'one thing' finished today, you will have a reasonable sense of satisfaction and a 'job well done'. So, what's your ONE THING you want to FOCUS on today that you can realistically expect to get done in a day and will feel pleased with having finished?

Second, research shows that if you plan your tomorrow before you go to bed, during sleep your brain gets busy organizing, ordering, resourcing, and figuring out how to get things done: your brain naturally sets to work figuring out what order tasks should be in, who you need to talk to, what tools or resources you will need, how much help you'll have to ask for, how your day and time should be structured etc. So, this evening, put together your to-do list for tomorrow, and see if your productivity doesn't improve.
